INDUSTRIAL SAFETY FOR THE MANUAL HANDLING OF 200 LT / 55 GALLON STEEL DRUMS

There are many sophisticated devices for handling and moving 200 Lt. / 55 gallon drums currently available in the local marketplace. But none of them contemplate the most common and potentially most dangerous movements that drum handling plant workers must confront on a daily basis: the manual movement for short distances or accommodation purposes. The ROTAMB V1 drum-wheel is now available to make up for this deficiency and raise the standard of industrial plant worker safety.

This simple and light weight steel tool consists of a wheel that is quickly and easily attachable to and removable from the superior part of a drum by means of a lever mechanism. Once attached, the drum-wheel is positioned about 15 centimeters above the top of the drum and can be firmly grasped, permitting the worker to displace the drum, first by tilting it towards him and then rotating it safely and comfortably across the floor but never touching the drum itself with his/her hands. This reduces noticeably the potential hazards associated with the manual manipulation of these containers such as cuts and abrasions, the crushing of fingers and hands as well as the possibility of drums slipping and falling, causing potential contamination issues .

The ROTAMB V2 drum-wheel is a much more robustly built tool than the V1 model, designed to permit the lifting of drums by mechanical means such as winches or cranes. Once they are in the air, the drum-wheel allows these to be guided manually by the operator without ever touching the drum itself, therefore avoiding potential injuries and lesions associated with the physical contact with these containers.

Products similar to the V2 drum-wheel currently available in the local market, are attached to the drum at only 2 points. This scissor/weight clamping system is by nature unstable and therefore potentially dangerous. The three-point clamping system used in both the V1 and V2 models guarantees a higher degree of stability and safety for the movement and transportation of these containers. The addition of the wheel to this kind of device, allows the operator to guide and control the direction of the drum easily with just one hand, without ever touching it.
